Good quality work is always remembered and cited even after death of valuable researchers. They are quoted time to time for their contributions.
The researcher may pass away, but the contributions live forever. So 'Yes', the researcher remains alive. When I was a student, I thought that Alfred Nobel was alive! (Isn't this the same with film stars like Marilyn Monroe?)
It depends on the nature of his/her work. If his/her works addresses a fundamental research in his/her field, then most likely his/her works will be cited for many days to come.

Obviously, the researcher can influence to eternity if his/her work was discovery, new idea and imprinting and unique.
Some examples: Kopernikus, Archimedes. Plato, Newton, Kepler, Galilei, Kant, Curie, Einstein.... All are passed away but are totally present, at least in science.
Mankind would be poor and ignorant, if we would forget the large work of these scientists.
Yes, Even after passes away, Research carries name and continue till the civilization goes on.
If the research is valuable, then other researchers will keep citing it for decades and in some (relatvely rare) cases, even for centuries.
Yes, beyond doubt. Any scientific contribution will be remembered for ever. No one can eliminate or share it or suppress their contributions..
Yes, remembrance, citations, quotes of the scientific contribution or any type of documented contribution in any field or areas of specialization ---is a great tribute to such personalities even after their death for their great contribution to the society or mankind. Such personalities/persons will continue to remain alive for ever for their contributions/achievements.These contributor are just like bright star in the sky. They all will continue to shine for ever.
Einstein, Gauss, Laplace, Bayes, Pasteur, etc. These names echo through the pages of our references because their works are seminal in their fields. Ones who broke through the frontier of their fields generally survives for ages.
Sure they do. If they immensely contributed quality work to the scientific body of knowledge, their contributions should not vaporize in their demise. I want to believe though I have no exact proof or reference at the moment that Isaac Newton's discoveries and work persists many years after he passed on.
Dear Sanjay,
For the part of my research, i was searching for some information on innovation and found one of the most cited research was in the year 1970s. The research report was typed in a type writer those days and i found the information in that report was really useful.
Thus, anything that is good, will live forever even after the researcher's time and beyond.
All the best for your good works.
Regards.
Sekar Gopal.
Naturally, we all belong to that elite group, where our work stands to speak as long it is referred and relevant to that time period, even when we do not exist.
If & only if the research work of the dead was genuine, highly valuable, and with scope then it will keep reminding the interested living researchers of the passing person. Reality is that the number of those concerned is usually small & most published research becomes obsolete.
The identity of a scholar is not himself but the work that he produces. If the work is such that it caries on then the researcher lives on if the work dies the researcher dies. Same with pieces of art, literature political struggles etc.
We leave behind many traces not only in the form of publications, which can be rediscovered after many years, so it is with our predecessors, as we often use their achievements, often relying on earlier studies. But we leave foster children who also become scientists and they carry further our achievements, publications, theses.
Yes. Obviously, the researcher will be remembered for his valuable contribution to the society.
Dear Sanjay,
Yes,...anyway... but mostly you will remain alive by people coming out of your working group.
With best regards
Michael
Sanja:
Digital achiving now makes it possible for researchers' works to remain on the Internet after their passing. However, as others have pointed out, the nature of the work would determine it being cited in future works. For example, if it is a seminal work in a specific filed, the latter would most likely happen.
Best regards,
Debra
Dear Sanjay,
Here, I can give you an example from my field (science education), to show that researchers live on, even when they are physically separated by death.
"Many people believe that American biologist James Watson and English physicist Francis Crick discovered DNA in the 1950s. In reality, this is not the case. Rather, DNA was first identified in the late 1860s by Swiss chemist Friedrich Miescher. Then, in the decades following Miescher's discovery, other scientists--notably, Phoebus Levene and Erwin Chargaff--carried out a series of research efforts that revealed additional details about the DNA molecule, including its primary chemical components and the ways in which they joined with one another. Without the scientific foundation provided by these pioneers, Watson and Crick may never have reached their groundbreaking conclusion of 1953: that the DNA molecule exists in the form of a three-dimensional double helix."

Highly valuable scientific contributions will remain forever. So researcher do. Quality scientific results are forever!
It's not just about the memory of our teammates, it is also our thoughts and experiences recorded in the books, all of which are taught by our descendants. I'm going out always with the assumption that what we do is a continuation of the work of the people living before us. In reality remains far behind the letter is useful to someone who will live when we are gone. Whether what we were doing is saved on the internet, whether on paper or in the form of tangible invention, the method of analysis, a mathematical formula. Always some element of our work once someone for something can be useful, because wykonjemy our tasks diligently and meticulously. And I think that for the good cause does not matter if someone, sometime after 100 years quote, that meant oil Najda etryczny in stevia growing in Poland, or Roland Iosif Moraru has written such and such work (sorry for the simple example), but it is important that that someone will be needed in his research work.
Indeed works and names of a researcher or a scientist lives regardless of the existence of the person in life or not as long as the works are needed to be used or to be cited for current scientific activities. Fundamental results of mathematics and science that are established by people who have passed away long time ago are used and cited now and then with some of them bear their names. Some topics even bear names of individuals who made tremendous works and contributions in that topic.
Anyway, something always remains, regardless whether they are breakthroughs for humanity or not, because really, every Baden, experience, we do overcomes some limits and we ourselves must be aware of that.
It is written in the Scripture that when one dies, his ability to increase in good deeds ceases, except in three. These include; the good deeds he has done during his lifetime as his account of deeds with Allaah is credited each time somebody benefits from his good deeds. Secondly, the good children who remember him in good and third, prayers from those he left.
Research adds to, and increases knowledge base of mankind and it can be confidently declared to belong to the first category.
My people (Yoruba from Nigeria) say: "Bi Onirese ba ko ti ko fin'gba mo, eyii ti o ti fin sile ko lee parun mo laelae". Literally means: Even, when an artist decides not to engrave different artistic designs on materials, the one he has so far done (in circulation) shall continue to speak for him.
Research lives on, even after the death of the researcher. Imagine, we still talk about Pluto, Shakespare, and all those researchers of earlier centuries. They are dead but, their research works live after them.

Sanjay sir,
Yes.
Knowledge is immortal. research done by a researcher would remain alive. The true contribution of a researcher is a long term sustainable contribution to the knowledge.
Good knowledge remains forever.
The contribution of the researcher is acknowledged and the researcher remains alive through the contribution.
Dear Sanjay,
I agree that in contributing to knowledge the author remains alive, even with little things which may seem countless. Some people became renowed after their death as sometimes people may not realize that every person in this world is offering messages of good will.

Carmen Camilleri
Scientists are getting old, they pass away but their work will remain for the benefit of mankind!
For every researcher we can generally observe that '' FRAME IS A FOOD THAT DEAD MEN EAT''.
Living for ever and our work being cited is the real motivation for having been in the scientific fraternity - also an impetus to other budding researchers.
Dear Roland,
I´m of the same opinion. If I´m away I´m away. But the question here was "Does a researcher remain alive...". Yes, if the work was remarkable and important.
But if you now take your point of sight and decide, because I will anyway dissapear there will be no sense to deliver good work, it´s also a wrong viewpoint. So I think it´s better to accept the illogical wish for "eternity" in the scientific life than to accept the total indifference and apathy in research.
Many theories were not accepted during lifetime of famous scientists. The following contribution brings information on ten people who became famous after death. Fine analysis and the death effects for each of them.

Dear friends, I always remember this..
FEEBLE IS THE LAMP OF FAME,
BY WHICH MAN INSCRIBES HIS NAME
ON THE WALLS OF TIME FOR OTHERS TO SEE...
Perhaps being remembered by a few close friends and relatives is sufficient for many of us? And sometimes I wonder if the close friends and relatives forget us, even though we may not be famous film stars like Marilyn Monroe or Patrick Macnee?
(Roland, I believe the wish comes from the desire for immortality.)
Yeah, well actually for fame, if there is praised among praising.
Remembering a remarkable scientist is often a difficult task and a matter of chance. For example, do you know who really discovered insulin? Officially, Canadian physician Banting (Nobel Prize winner), but the story actually begins much earlier with the findings of Romanian physician Paulescu. Obviously, there were many others whose work facilitated this discovery. In conclusion, thanks to the work of many scientists, persons with diabetes are able to live long lives.
Dear Colleagues,
Good Day,
"How to Be Remembered After You Die
A lot of writers write to become immortal. That is mainly the reason why most people join wikiHow, to share and immortalize their original discovery or knowledge. Dying is a very sad time but still a part of life. We all die sometime and some of you want to prepare for their incoming death by wanting to live forever. Whatever your reason to want to become remembered, it is up to you but remember that it is good to be remembered for the good things you have done.
Here are six steps for that:
1- Get published.
2- Become a politician.
3- Invent.
4- Excel.
5- Start something.
6- Gift Something."
Please, see the following websites for detail:

Through research work and citations, one creates a history, and every historical fact is remain live till civilization goes on.
Research findings documented in the literature would continue to be cited over and over again by those studying and researching in the same field of knowledge irrespective whether those findings are still valid or may have been enhanced by the later findings. This is because the earlier findings may have contributed to the more refined findings at a later stage. As many are aware, published sources are often cited in present tense that indicate that they continue to remain alive although they were published years earlier.
Your published, quality research work makes you immortal. This is what, I am sure, most of us have experienced during our PhD thesis work. I had to go through many pretty old publications for knowledge and to find out procedures / protocols for carrying out experiments. This keeps on happening at later stages of our professional life as well.
Researcher citations and works will remain after his passing away. Because the scientific legacy will keep him in memory. We have researchers have died from more than a thousand years, The world remembers them through their contributions in scientific, literary or artistic.
Dear Colleagues,
Good Day,
If you have little time to relax try and click on the attached link, by entering a Quiz, named
"How Will You Be Remembered After Death?"
it contain 9 simple questions to find out how you will be remembered after death based on your personality. The answer may surprise you!
http://www.quizony.com/how-will-you-be-remembered-after-death/index.html
Human beings are characterized by having survival instinct & deep inside, they like to live for many years. The reality is that the hated death can occur at any time. A way of condolence to ourselves is to speak about us as being alive or immortal by leaving some work behind us after we pass away. I think there is an element of exaggeration or escapism in our human rationale. I saw many dear colleagues dying in the past 31 years of my service in my present university. Most of us burst with tears when they died but after a short while, they were little or rarely remembered & the same will occur to us when we depart. Scientifically speaking, this is the hard reality of life on this earth.
Nikola Tesla : "Let the future tell the truth and evaluate each one according to his work and accomplishments. The present is theirs; the future, for which I really worked, is mine."
Dear Nilotpal,
You have given a fantastic reply to this question. I simply admire you and your answer.
Nikola Tesla is not alive, but he is living by his inventions. Nikola Tesla is person responsible for almost every available modern technology that we have available today.
His words that I have quoted on the previous page were a miracle at that time.
It depends on how good the work the researcher has done:
1. For example, the laws of heredity from Gregor Mendel's (see below) studies on peas can be considered the foundation of modem Genetics. His basic 'Genetic laws' are mentioned virtually in every Life-science textbook, and are used everyday today in researches even he passed away.
2. On the other hand, I also believe that some of the researchers come into their fields 'quietly' and retired 'quietly', without the notice of anybody.
Yes I strongly agree with this "Good quality work is always remembered and cited even after death of valuable researchers". The good work for a researcher is perment and will always be cited and remembered even when he/she is no longer alive.
Each of the publication, every lecture, exercises, contact with students and dispute such as this, unconsciously making history and go down in history. And whether by name or age, or year does not matter.
It is an eternal position in the life of a researcher to publish and still live even after physical absence. Much cherished is their work which goes on in iterative searches for benefit to the human beings, cited on and on.
Physically dead, lives on paper or online, it's almost the Matrix.
Dear Roland,
I prefer virtually alive. But some times I wish to be freed from somebody who is living but better should be virtually disappeared. My special expression in such cases is: "I even don´t ignore this guy".
Good researchers will be remembered long time even after their demise. Their works and contributions will be viewed and cited and hence their presence will be felt for a long time.
Many past researchers, not only famous, may be found through different web services and links, like Wikipedia for example. There are lists like Muslim scientists, American scientists, European scientists...
So they have their virtual profiles when they pass away!
Tribute to Indian Missile Man , Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam
The contribution of Indian Missile Man , Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam , will always be remembered for ever.
There are some of his famous quotes to reproduce here -will be a great tribute to such a wonderful personality.
Thinking should become your capital asset, no matter whatever ups and downs you come across in your life."
"Thinking is progress. Non-thinking is stagnation of the individual, organisation and the country. Thinking leads to action. Knowledge without action is useless and irrelevant. Knowledge with action, converts adversity into prosperity."
"When you speak, speak the truth; perform when you promise; discharge your trust... Withhold your hands from striking, and from taking that which is unlawful and bad..."
"What actions are most excellent? To gladden the heart of a human being, to feed the hungry, to help the afflicted to lighten the sorrow of the sorrowful and to remove the wrongs of injured..."
"Away! Fond thoughts, and vex my soul no more! Work claimed my wakeful nights, my busy days Albeit brought memories of Rameswaram shore Yet haunt my dreaming gaze!"
"I will not be presumptuous enough to say that my life can be a role model for anybody; but some poor child living in an obscure place in an underprivileged social setting may find a little solace in the way my destiny has been shaped. It could perhaps help such children liberate themselves from the bondage of their illusory backwardness and hopelessness?.."
"My worthiness is all my doubt His Merit- all my fear- Contrasting which my quality Does however appear "
Certainly yes,
Our Own Honorable Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam Sir will remain alive in our memories.
Once again tribute to Indian Missile Man , Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam Sir...........................
Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam, formar president of India - great scientist, is/will be known as "Missile Man". He, as scientist, created history.
Dear Sanjay,
Your question is correctly answered by you today. In fact, the great lover of teaching Dr. Abdul Kalam taught us today that, researchers like him will be alive thro their works even after they are not with us physically anymore.
May his great soul rest in peace and bless all of us to be great researchers.
Best Regards.
Sekar Gopal.
Passing away of 'The Great Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam, Formar President of India and Great Scientist' is a big loss to scientists', researchers' and teachers' community of India and the world.
May his great soul rest in peace.
Many scientists and philosophers names are still free to scientific and media circles due to their achievements and their research. I think people will always remember them.
The real tribute to Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam will be to contribute your best possible to nation and society.
Dear Sanjay Kumar,
After the death of a man his work always remains useful. Most of the authors of the books that we use is not alive.
Regards, Shafagat
Each person has a chance to remain in history after his death. To do this, create a masterpiece (painting, music) or make a discovery, details of which will be fixed in any legal form. Sometimes information about these creations become popular through decades or centuries. Remember the fate of Bach, Van Gogh, inventions of Leonardo da Vinci......
If any work was done to really help humans (and their life) will still unforgettable with their researchers. Researchers in the world today's remember Avicenna (Ibn Sina), Geber (Jabir ibn Hayyan), Avenzoar (Ibn Zuhr) and many other.
I think previous posts have already mentioned most of the cases, quality scientists have their legacy in supporting directly or indirectly later development of science, in the form of quotations, or simply in the form of ideas or enlightenments. Their contribution sustains as long as they are still quoted.
Dear colleagues,
A good contrubution with great citations is the real motivation.
And thanks to this contribution, the researcher remain virtually alive, immortal.
Regards
Dear Kumar:
I believe that yes. Research work and citations, similar to the ideas, permeate both the space and the time touching new non contemporaneous persons and his-works.
kind regards
Marcos Nobre
I can agree saying researchers are always alive due to the work and citations, because I am biased and soft-hearted for the research community.
But i believe that a researcher will remain alive forever if his/her research has industry application, and not just adding to the theory of knowledge. Citations could extend the remembrance of good work done for few years or a couple of decades. But application of the research work done makes a researcher live forever. Again these are just my views, would appreciate critics who differ from me!
Colleagues, please note. Unfortunately, the names of many geniuses turn to dust and disappear from history. A genius at the dawn of humanity associating grass-tumbleweed from prototype wheels. Who remembers the name? But everyone knows the names of the inventors of the car (with wheels), locomotive, steam engine ... If a man does not have the ambition (real scientists often just such), the invention may lose the name. Or fall into the hands of dishonest businessmen. So, to the name of genius went down in history - it is necessary to have certain conditions are met (see above).
Hello Sanjay Kumar,
In good journals, I have seen citations that date back to the 1950s in articles published as recent as 2013. So in my experience, the answer is yes.
One reference is as follows:
Herzberg, F., Mausner, B., & Snyderman, B. (1959). The motivation to work. New York, NY: Wiley.
Yes, it is absolutely true and I am fully agree with you. I may add one thing about research and researcher. The research is always alive and explored but if a researcher is not a good human being and his/her research has some applied purpose, then it may affect.
Dear All,
The researcher’s (original thinker) ideas – if understood – or example of his/her life – if sacrificed for humanity - can survive.
Generally speaking, a researcher does not remain alive in the form of research work and citations after passing away. I'll prove that from my discipline: Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) has been founded since 1907. If you go to a good university library in the U.K, you will see a huge number of paper volumes & these volumes contain just summaries of research papers with the names of authors. How many of the dead authors remained alive in the memories of researchers (scholars, students...) ? Very few percentage indeed, because most of the research has not been outstanding. Let us be humble & realistic.
Our former President, notable scientist, statesman, beloved teacher, Dr.APJ Abdul Kalam is still alive through his penned work.
http://www.oneindia.com/india/dr-apj-abdul-kalam-here-are-list-books-authored-him-1820376.html
It depends on the level of consciousness he is being reminded. This way an artist gets a higher qualification I guess because the tributes and homages to him are more spiritual.
Our dear friend @Lijo Francis wrote on FB : "My Heartfelt Condolence to Prof. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. May his soul rest in peace."
O yes, certainly the researcher do stay alive. And that is strange, since copy right expires after 20 years. However, I believe it is so nice to be able to refer to a ghuru in the field, living long before us, but still relevant in this new world.
Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, former President of India, shall be remembered as "Missile Man".
Of course , the good works will continue to be cited . Plato quoted Socrates after he died and more than two thousand years later we are still quoting both of them !!
A question that intrigues me personally is: Do we really want to stay alive?. There is a discussion about "the right to be forgotten in the Internet Era" This means that we have the right to have the information about us deleted from the web.
Do we want our profile on RG to be removed if we die?
I do not !!. .
