Life moves with 'up's and 'down's and moments with happiness and sadness towards achieving various short term and long term goals, but there may be certain ultimate goal of whole life.
“Do all the good you can. By all the means you can. In all the ways you can. In all the places you can. At all the times you can. To all the people you can. As long as ever you can.” ― John Wesley (English clergyman 1703-1791).
Giving up the good work to serve the previous and reward by what has created man and life "God." at the basis of an order of an Almighty. because this life is a transition to eternal life where the human being can not give them anything.
Who has a goal in his life it sees better able to arrange his priorities and his life and focus his effort. Who does not know the purpose of his presence in this world is more like a person who lost in the desert are spacious, bolsters the large walk in, but lost and mobilized, and then his fate to loss at the end of the day. life eternal and immortal must be the ultimate goal.
Life outside of the human society is to survive, reproduce and accept nature's calling, the end of life with no living and remaining effects and continue that way, it is a life totally under the mercy of the environment without or little consciousness.
Life in the human society as a principle should not be to do what nature does but to be spearheaded by consciousness (hyper or its sub forms) to do things that will pass the test of time after one has died.
It is to do things while we live that will be valid and cherished by the living after we passed away, things we have done that survive beyond our bodily existence and left an eternal imprint as long as the human society continue to exist.
These are the things that differentiate the ultimate and true purpose of life of humans and than non humans.
The ultimate aim of my life is to live in a pleasant and fruitful manner in a complete harmony. To lead a life without doing harms to others, in fact helping others, and gaining love and respects of the people around us, to contribute to the society and the scientific community as much as I can, and finally to leave the world while teaching a lot of dynamic students..... These are my dream rather than aims..
Think ultimate aim of life can be different from one person to another and also can be different through out different stages of the same person's life. Some people set their ultimate aim of life according to their own value system and some people is basing on what God wants them to achieve as their ultimate aim of life. Whatever the ultimate aim of life that we set to achieve, wishing everyone have the commitment to do the best that we can and achieve it before we departing from this world.
Does life has a ultimate aim? It would be easy if this question were be simply answered. Life is so elementary but often too complicated mainly when it is a subject of talking about. The life’s aim is the continuity. Not only the possibility of continuity but the manifestation of continuity. Sudev’s opinion is a universally acceptable even desirable human option what is difficult to realise. He formed appropriately this is a dream, a desire and life circumstances and our weakness (egoism) hamper the implementation.
George expressed a well-known narrative. Endre Ady (Hungarian poet) has a famous poem starting with the lines:
“Szeretném ha szeretnének … és lennék valakié. Lennék valakié. “ I would like to loved … and I would belong to somebody. I would belong to somebody.
I feel that Ady’s confession shows our eternal desire (aim): not to be alone, to be understood, to be loved. This relationship must be mutual and we must invest at least as much if not more into this than the other. Without sacrificing ourselves we cannot be lucky. Is it the aim of life?
For some, life is a game to win. For others it’s a challenge to overcome. For others it’s a riddle to solve. I’ve known men and women who see life as a sentence to bear, or a struggle to survive. Some are more positive. They see life as an adventure to enjoy. I believe that Life is God’s Gift to Man.
I believe that God has put gifts and talents and ability on the inside of every one of us. When you develop that and you believe in yourself and you believe that you're a person of influence and a person of purpose, I believe you can rise up out of any situation.
When he/she was born in this world, he/she was crying while everyone was laughing, do some thing everlasting contribution to the society, so that when u leave this world ,people should not laugh on u.--. In my view , ultimate aim of life is purity of our soul. Be good human being.
Life is dynamic and therefore the word ultimate does not have much implication in this context, because the state of ones life and the present environment will determine its next goal. Moreover if you consider life as a dynamic system then for each individual the initial condition (state) is different, the environment that determines the inputs will be different and therefore the next aspiration has to be different. I therefore conclude that there can not be any thing called ultimate aim.
Srimad Bhagvat Maha Puran; Book 1, Chapter 2, Verses 9,10.
Dear Sanjay,
I would explain the meaning of these Sanskrit verses in a bit detail so that you can understand them better.
It starts with the word 'dharmasya' which means thought or conduct that is correct for one's age, intellect and social status as well as not harmful to the social fabric. The fiirst part of the first verse says that dharma has its culmination in liberation. Wealth/ fame is not its goal.
Similarly, artha or wealth and fame is not merely for kama or enjoyment and fulfilment of desires, but its ultimate goal is to further dharma or good conduct.
Also kama is not to be directed merely to sensual enjoyment, but is meant for sustenance of life. The only goal of life is to know the ultimate truth, not material gains that are obtained from variety of occupations.
Life has four aims - 1. Dharma - knowing and following the right conduct. Artha - Obtaining wealth and fame. 3. Kama - Enjoyment and desire fulfilment and 4. Moksha - Identity with the God.
Even though the fourth one is the ultimate, it cannot be obtained untill one properly reaches the first three through a balanced or disciplined life. Such a practice is known as Yoga. Through Yoga one can attain a balanced life and make himself ready for the fourth goal. I suggest the reading of Dharma-Sutras - one by Katyayan and Manu is good. Arthashastra by Kautilya, Kamasutra by Vatsyayan and Yoga Sutras by Patanjali.
As for me, I derived my ultimate goal in life from Golden Rule/ Ethic of Reciprocity which states that “Do unto others, what you want others to do unto you”.
"The aim of life is appreciation; there is no sense in not appreciating things; and there is no sense in having more of them if you have less appreciation of them."
I agree with Professor Barbara Sawicka. Some intellectuals summarize absolute truth, absolute good, and absolute beauty in one word which is GOD. Therefore, if the ultimate aim of life is to please GOD, then it is a noble sublime one. GOD can do without us; HE just wants us "the humans" to be good with each other at any time, in any place, and by all means.
We should respect the lives and do something in the honesty way by hard working. For me, I try my best to be a good human being. To serve the people of the world by honesty way i.e. research, job, etc..
Life is a god's given gift -not in our hand .It is the result of previous action of our lives which we receive in our present life as a fruits of our action of our earlier life .It is not necessary that the fruit of earlier action may bring the result positive /negative result in this life.
As we know we are the architect of our own fortune & ultimate aim of our life is totally control by us as it is in our hand .With this ,every individual has this own END ,& it is up to him that in which mode he has to move & select the path of his road for his ultimate end.
Although while expressing my views for this beautiful question raised although the same are not exactly passing to the tune of this good question i have taken liberty to recall my early years of my observation .As a college student or why travelling incidentally my eyes moves towards the hand of surrounding person & used to try my observation for my future guideline & in well many cases after coupled of years,it has given me the satisfactory result .
As we know our hand is a our mirror what we are going to be get reflected in our hand .if not in detail one can certainly just his behavior ,temperament ,emotion ,feelings ,success & such other areas which are equally important ultimate aim of life .
Last but not the least the importance of our THUMB ,the basic end of our life .As we fully aware that THUMB impression are not the same for every individual in the entire universal ,& in this line THUMB impression has become the legal document .Our THUMB indicates our rational approach ,Temperament ,if any angry & cruelty nature ,the feeling of love as an important reflection of our human approach & so to say humanity .
Dear Friend Sanjay kumar ,
Perhaps you will feel that i have side tracked your very good question but i could not control my experience of my early period & as such i have placed my views in the answiering the question & perhaps quite the good number of human characteristic i have touched remains the part of question .
With this it is not possible to draw a line of demarcation for the every individual the ultimate aim of life.
This is a philosophical idea! And in the same time it is religious.
The answer depends on belief of each one. The aim of life can be any thing like: feeding, happiness, money, authority... But if we say the "Ultimate" aim of life it must be a "Very Noble Goal".
According to Hinduism, the oldest religion of the world, the ultimate aim of human life is to unite with God who is the all pervasive reality. This can happen in steps by setting up smaller goals and acheiving them over a period of many births. In the last birth the man becomes perfectly desireless and is able to live the continent life which causes evolution of his mind and spinal chord which makes him fit for the union with God. This union is called moksha or liberation. As long as this does not happen, the rebirth will continue. The cause of the rebirth being desires (trishna in Buddhism). The nature of this union with God, is very well discussed in following books.
"Sri Ramakrisha The Great Master" by Swami Saradananda, (tr.) Swami

I know that is not a scientific source, but J.K. Rowling says an interesting thing in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. In the book, Albus Dumbledore explains to Harry Potter that the Philosopher's Stone had been found by Nicolas Flamel, an alchemist of fourteenth century. Flamel produced the elixir of life, which allows him to live forever. But, Dumbledore added, he has now stopped producing it. Harry Potter argues that in this way he would die. ‘of course, but for a well-organized mind even death can be a wonderful adventure’ Dumbledore answers. I thought a lot about this dialogue, and I think that the ultimate aim of life could be indeed having a well-organized mind, in affects and cognition.
Life is precious. Man is the only person having brains to utilise and apply technology for the benefit of the human kind to survive. We all know what is ethical and what is not ethical . Even then we exploit nature for personnel benefits
This exploitation is allowed by society is creating problems to society . We must always educate people for ethical professional developments. This will add value to develop sustainable ethical society. This is required to avoid destruction of the earth due to exploitation of the technology.
Aim of our life should be to make use of the Brain for the development of the society to make society to live happily forever. Younger generation should live happily without cursing old generation for development of life which is dependent on various man made natural adversity
I really think you are right: "... We must always educate people for ethical professional developments. This will add value to develop sustainable ethical society. This is required to avoid destruction of the earth due to exploitation of the technology. "
I have found several university teachers missing this ethical development, destroying scientific principles and compromising younger generation studies.
One of the aims of life should be the developement of a model that maximizes the qualities of everybody while minimizing their defauts, wih the restriction of respecting one-another.
I'm equally in agreement with most of the commentators above. Life is very simple but a times we make it difficult for ourselves. Like a poster suggested that ethical development of young generations is very important.
We should be very honest while setting our goal for life and should be kind to humanity. The rest leave to GOD (The creator) who has the sole authority to dignify us for our successes or failures.
"The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy."
What a beautiful and thought provoking question. My input as follows:-
1. You are blessed by god to born. (Aim of your birth is unknown to you).
2. Aims of life are planted by parents, friends, relatives, wife and so on to an extent. (The actors of your life drama is not choosen by you, many times it's god's blessings, thus aim of your life drama is unknown).
3. Your success / failures / accomplishments / pains are not in your hands. Pre designed based on your karma of the past and present.
4. Thus, we will not be able to understand the aim of life unless and until, we surrender ourselves to god fully with sincerity, humility and devotion.
5. Aim of life is known to people who lived meaningful life with spiritual inclination. Rest of us are all passengers in the life journey.
It's a bigger subject and very difficult to put it in words Sanjay. Sit in your pooja room and ask this question to god, and you will get the answer right there.
