Why dont you simply use RPMI without phenol red (http://www.sigmaaldrich.com/catalog/product/sigma/r8755?lang=en®ion=CA). The other alternative is to use PBS supplemented with 2-10% FBS.

Commercially RPMI without phenol red is available. Also you can make RPMI without phenol red.
