I am looking for a database of European Carabidae traits - average body length, wing morphology, habitat preference, etc. I have come across Carabids.org but it seems to be down. Is anyone aware of an active database?
Hi Jack! I doubt whether there is anything that is contemporary, comprehensive and authoritative. We developed one within my group in Finland covering the species that were in our data, and included data in some publications during the early 2000s. Of course, Lindroth's monumental 'Ground Beetles (Carabidae) of Fennoscandia' (openly accessible online) contains a lot of data. If you are interested, there will be a meeting of the European Carabidologists in Debrecen, Hungary next year, which could be a good forum for discussing this further.
As far as I know, an online database like the one you are looking for was developed by Assmann's group with the name Carabidae.org. You can find the references in the linked publication doi: 10.1111/icad.12045. However, it may have been closed. You could contact prof. Assmann or the first author of the publication to obtain information about it.
The Hungarian Natural History Museum has relative big collection and data about Carabus genus. Good illustrated book is The genus Carabus in the Carpatian basin by Imre Retezár and Győző Szél. Győző Szél active member of the HNHM.
Hi. You can look at BETSI (https://portail.betsi.cnrs.fr/ ) where you will find some traits for carabid beetles. In my memory, the database was less complete than carabids.org.
As Stephen mentioned, there indeed will be the European Carabidologists' Meeting this June in Budapest, Hungary. On behalf of the organizers, I can say that talking about the possible revival of an online database of (European) carabid traits is a perfect topic for fruitful discussion (with hopefully a nice outcome).
For those, who are interested in joining ECM, we launched the website of the conference today at https://sites.google.com/view/21ecm The registration and call for abstracts is open until the end of April.
I am definitely interested in coming to the ECM and would be keen to discuss this topic. Is there an associated European Carabidologists' society I could join?
Hi Jack! It would be great to see you in Budapest. As far as I know, there is nothing like the Society of European Carabidologists and honestly, I don't know if its establishment was ever discussed among carabid enthusiasts (maybe elders can tell more). Anyway, it can be another good topic to discuss :)
