Moves are afoot to start the publication of an anonymous journal. This is a journal in which academics can publish refereed, but anonymous articles on controversial subjects. This way, they may avoid threats and potential violence against them. Some very big academic names wre involved in setting it up. It will be called "The Journal of Controversial Ideas". Is this a good thing?

Controversy varies geographically and regionally. Will there be an embargo on certain subjects? Will any level of academic be able to contribute - or those considered experts in the controversial field? What would the attraction be for academics who remain anonymous - and cannot claim credit for both their views and impact i.e citation etc.

You're asking the wrong man now! Like you, I forsee problems of various types. But it seems that if your overriding concern is personal safety you should go this way. I'd guess the journal itself will decide what's in and what's not. The big names include Peter Singer, so it shouldn't be half-assed.
