Does it really matter if young children play with toy guns?

In my childhood all us good "cowboys" carried toy guns. Twenty years ago, the next generation did exactly the same. None us have turned into mass killers, or any type of killer at all. Prince William and his wife are now being put under pressure because Prince George was seen playing with a toy gun. Is that fair criticism?
