A successful learner in the modern society should be able to integrate knowledge from different sources, educate and self-educate throughout the life. Is self education the main goal and more effective than the other methods of education?
Interesting question. I think people learn in different ways and for some self-education is quite effective. I study through correspondence and online distance learning (ODL) and it has worked really well for me. This however is because of my circumstances in that I also work full time and part-time studies through ODL is the better option for me. I would probably have loved to go to lectures and listen to experts and their insights. However, there is such a wealth of accessible information out there that we are not short of "experts" as long as you look at credible academic sources and not just believe anything you read on the interweb.
From what I've read in my study material, it is better to be in an interactive environment for retaining information. To simply read books and journal articles is a type of discipline and commitment that is hard to do at the best of times and hard to retain information in this way. A visual display is better, but should be concise and effective. An interactive learning environment is the best for learning and retaining information. Sometimes I also make voice notes to myself to talk about a topic that I need to revise for exams and this has helped me to retain information provided that the voice note is clear and direct and also that I listen attentively.
From a Bcom cum laude student (industrial and organisational psychology) at an ODL educational institution, currently busy with Bcom Honours also through ODL.
I was raised up with school by mail, what was perfect to me, with my voracious and Speedy Gonzales way to learn. My nightmare begun on my first school day, when I was 10. First question I asked the teacher, I was responded that I should wait one year to know the answer. I stopped working at school and still was among the best. As an adult, I enjoy taking courses on-line, specially in USA, where Speedy Gonzales learners are better accepted. I think normal school with normal teachers draw gifted students at their own mediocrity level.
I think the term self-education is a relative term because no one learns alone but needs to be directed and taught, whether by a person or through a book, video, or research group. The secret to success in learning in any form is an ability to carry the hardship and passion for learning.
very easy. First ensure the Internet connection. Second step is to select the students that are able to do it, in order to set up a general frame adapted to your culture. Teachers have to respond any student question, even though they'll have more time to do so. Let the students organize their study life exactly the way they want. As far they must learn through Internet, learn them how to use it for studying. A teacher must control the learning process every week. As young they begin to self learn, they'll enjoy it. Also self learning shows you the way of responsibility: you turn responsible for your own knowledge and can't blame system or teachers (as far you're your own teacher).
I think many of poor people cannot use internet and some of texts in internet aren't correct. Radio or or television may be more effective for this purpose.
Radio and television can't respond the student's answers, which is totally necessary because the student left to himself needs references time to time. Now, there are ways to restrict Internet connections. And if they learn how to joke them, at least, they would have learn something. And do you think Internet was done just for rich? Or that poor people are unable to follow an intuitive system? The fact youngsters are far more gifted in Internet than adults does not ring your bell? Maybe adults feel a bit afraid, feeling somehow useless with Internet. Maybe they could think on adapting their teaching, maybe they could consider learning too.
I think in developing countries radio can effect more than internet, because the internet network is not so extensive. Certainly, the programs that are broadcasting should be prepared correctly based on scientific documents.
