I'm currently studying the synthesis of core-shell spinel ferrites. Most commonly, the core is spinel ferrite, and the shell is metal oxides (such as TiO2, SiO2, etc.). My question is, can the core and shell be substituted for one another (theoretically and practically)?

We get the core and shell as a result of chemical reactions. Therefore, the nucleus must be transformed as a result of a chemical reaction. Theoretically and practically, this can be done only when the nanoparticle is destroyed. The answer to your question is no. We can again pose the problem of first obtaining the core from the oxide. Then put on a shell of spinel.
However, you can try to get your desired product from oxide and spinel precursors using our method, but it will be a mixture of nanoparticles

perhaps you could have interesting information from the works of Masanori Abe (for instance Electrochimica Acta Volume 45, Issue 20, 23 June 2000, Pages 3337-3343) who succeeded to deposit spinel ferrites on different substrates by electroless process below 100°C.
