Ring spot virus (PRSV) is the most destructive disease of papaya in India. PRSV is spread (transmitted) among papaya plants by mechanical activities like pruning, as it is transmitted through the sap. Numerous aphid species like Myzus persicae, Aphis craccivora, and Aphis gossypii spread this infestation. Seed transmission has not been detected. Definitely insecticide spray will be helpful to reduce the aphid population as well as for the control of PRSV. Is it possible to control or reduce PRSV through boron application along with insecticide spray?
An excellent question . There are certain diseases which block the phloem tissues , thereby , the translocation of some nutrients like boron , zinc , iron etc are adversely affected . And also , there are reports that instead of vertical movement , horizontal movement of nutrients is more prominently seen . There is every possibility to lessen the PRSV with boron application .
I don't know, but I think that the boron has no effect on the virus diseases.
When I was working with a micro-nutrient company in the Trichy zone as a Product Development Officer- I came across the same problem. I happened to recommend 500 gms of micro-nutrient mixture (IMT MS 24) along with 100 ml of Imidachloprid 17.8 per cent SL insecticide for 100 litres of water and later came to know, from the farmer, that the recommendation was effective. Also heard that Insecticide and Calcium Nitrate (in soluble form) combination will also give desired results.
That's what I am saying , micronutrients (Fe/Mn/Zn/B ) surely have some definitive role to play . The reason is that virus interferes with phloem tissues functioning , thereby , blocks the free movements of these micronutrients . It is well known that these micronutrients are moderately mobile within the plant . And , B is exclusively a phloem mobile nutrient . In this context only , I was responding .

To me the only way that these micro-nutrients may play a part in virus disease management (PRSV in that case) is by boosting the plant in fighting the infection. However, there are currently not enough supporting data in the literature on this issue. It will be good to test that hypothesis and check out the outcome. Until proven working, the use of resistant resistant cultivars seems to be the way to go in fighting PRSV.
I met a scientist at TNAU who advised me to try boron against CLCuD. Can boron be an effective control for virus .
