When I increase the load beyond a certain value, there is an error "TIME INCREMENT REQUIRED IS LESS THAN THE MINIMUM VALUE SPECIFIED".
What is the meaning of that? Until that value I get zero damage (choosing damage/fracture option as output).
My ultimate aim is to use XFEM in the model.
The error that you get "too many increments" simply means that your solution does not converge. You need to reconsider your problem definition ie: boundary conditions, geometry extra. For the first error "TIME INCREMENT REQUIRED IS LESS THAN THE MINIMUM VALUE SPECIFIED" again means that your solver cannot reach a solution with the automatic time increment option. When you define your step you can choose to have the time increment fixed and you can specify whatever value you need so that your solver can find a converged solution

as far as i know you are using the implicit solver and you need to decrease the increment size in the step properties.

I guess, this is because the no. of increments required for completing a step is more than 100. In ABAQUS, default setting for no. of increments are 100. You have to increase it to say 1000 or more depending on the step size.
you have to indicate it in step command. (*Step, inc = 10000). Also you may have to decrease the increment size further.

You could try using Abaqus/Explicit (due to the non-linearity of failure) if the material model is not strain rate dependent or the inertia effects are negligible.
