We isolated several species of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) identified as Lactobacillus fermentum in 2012. This was preserved by preparing 30% glycerol stocks and was routinely revived to check viability and to be used according to the needs of an experiment. New sets of glycerol stocks were also prepared in the subsequent years.
Recently, we revived old and new glycerol stocks of these LAB isolates. Upon 16S rRNA gene analysis, we found that the isolates are identified as Lactiplantibacillus plantarum and Lactiplantibacillus pentosus.
Given these, is it possible to claim that these isolates changed their identity through time? Or are there updates in the databases of nucleotide sequences?
Thank you!
