I analyzed water sample from a river and it has high iron concentration (5 mg/L). The iron in the sediment from the same station was 52950 ppm. There is no established guideline value for iron in sediment. However, I computed pollution indices for the sediment and the results showed the sediment has uncontaminated to moderately contaminated status. How is it possible that the water has very high iron concentration but the sediment is only moderately contaminated with iron? (Normally, Iron in natural river waters have 0.5-1 mg/L concentration).
