I think the importance of the vestibular system is greatly underestimated, and that it drives the development of the other senses. While checking the literature for cases of congenital vestibular absence, I have been unable to find any example of total loss of peripheral vestibular organs. Admittedly, I have not checked out all the older and obscurer references, but I do not think there is any histological example of total congenital loss. I suspect that a fetus with no vestibular system would not be able to move around or right itself in the womb, or develop normal motor or autonomic reflexes, and would die prenatally. Is there any proven case of total bilateral vestibular loss from birth in man or domestic animals with normal postnatal and sensory development?
