When subculturing my cells, I usually grow them in high glucose DMEM. I'm curious to know how significant the results are if I use low glucose DMEM instead.
Morphologically, no. But you would find cells grow slightly faster. Low glucose DMEM is commonly used in stem cell culture, which would help prevent differentiation. High glucose DMEM is normal used in all type of mammalian tissue cultures.
Hi Salman, Yu Bai is totally right. Besides that HG DMEM make your cells grow faster it my also change diverse signaling. e.g we found in our ESC cultures that glucose metabolism is switch in HG often to a more pronounced lactate production. Also other signaling pathways might be influenced. So be aware if you change your media that also the results of your experiments may differ in the end.
