The purpose of PhD is to prove that you can do research. If you have multiple published papers, this means that you have proven that you know how to do research. Does doing a PhD have meaning?
It is difficult to judge the quality and importance of publications without looking at them closely. When you apply for a job, it is much easier for the selection body to rely on the competence of the thesis reviewers. The existence of a PhD is a much easier way to prove scientific qualification than to present 10 publications. It is also easier for the public to assess a qualification when they see a PhD. You cannot use the title "Author of 10 scientific publications" as an addition to your name.
Some people working in industries and research institutes/laboratories continue to publish articles without acquiring a doctorate degree. They may have accumulated enough knowledge and research expertise. Some may receive a honorary PhD degree based on their research work over a long period of time. It depends upon the requirement of the firm to go for PhD. Certainly PhD is required to work inside academic institutions and prefix Dr. to your name. Industries may provide higher package for PhD holders. A PhD degree confirms that your research dissertation was reviewed and recommended by international experts and endorsed by a University. PhD degree provides more recognition.
In my opinion, to publish paper is not related to any degree. Publications is not a certificate of researcher. Actually, PhD degree certifies that holders have ability to solve scientific/ research problem. Unfortunately, PhD degree is associated with papers now a days.
Dear Isaac Dinaharan , Salah Uddin , Zahoor Ahmed , Wolfgang R. Dick
I agree that a PhD is an easier way for institutes to check for someone’s ability to perform research. Many of you are saying that having a PhD proves that you have papers that are peer-reviewed and certified as good by expert. However, if a paper is published in a journal that automatically means that the article has been peer-reviewed and considered important enough to publish by a group of experts on the topic. Hence, having multiple papers published (especially, in prestigious journals), is proof that this person has several discoveries deemed important enough by experts. Many people never do research again after they obtain their PhD. I would honestly prefer a person with 10 years of research experience with no PhD over a person with a PhD that has not done any research outside of the PhD thesis. many people do PhDs only for the name “Dr.” and I find that very superficial. Why is a PhD a better proof than mu articles published in journals (because publishing is already proof of the importance of the work).
Once upon a time, whenever some found a problem, he try to find an expert person (supervisor) that has ability to help him to find the solution of that problem. But now days, the trend of PhD is totally different. People do PhD for their promotion. If you have papers in highly ranked journals but you don't have PhD degree, you are not eligible for higher post. In other aspect, a uni can grant a PhD degree to a person if he/she complete the degree award criteria by rules. For example, first get admission (there is admission requirement), passed some courses, find problems, experiment, papers, etc.
There is also one special case to award PhD degree without getting admission if university authority (syndicate) evaluate a person as per his/her experience. This PhD degree known as honorary PhD degree.
Yes, still you need to earn a PhD degree. On the other hand, the number of papers itself is not important, I rather think about the quality of papers more than the number of papers.
Absolutely, so many people only do PhDs for the promotion and many people are discriminated against because they don have a PhD even those they are excellent at what they do. This is a problem that should be solved. We should not evaluate people based on titles but rather on merits. Also note that not all PhD thesis have the same quality. Many PhD thesis are just good enough while other PhD thesis are exceptional. So the quality of the thesis Is in my opinion more important than just the title.
I agree that the quality is more important than the quantity. However, having a large quantity of high-quality articles is better than a small number of high-quality articles.
If you are doing research for the sake of it, then you need neither a PhD nor published papers... the journey is the important thing and not the destination. If you want to pursue an academic carrer, then a PhD is mandatory. If you are going to work in industry, then maybe papers are enough.
Published a research article means your work is assessed and accepted after peer review. What matters most is quality of research work and impact of the journal.
Hi Roudy El Haddad . I think you have two different things :
1. Academic certificate .
2. Research work.
The academic certificate is very important if you want certain high level job and it depends on the research work to have it . It is like a ticket for traveling. without a ticket you can’t travel.
The research work does not need a certificate to do . It is important for promotion to higher rank or if you want to apply for a position as a supporting criteria.
Similar topics have already been discussed here on RG many times. In my opinion, PhD does not provide any additional knowledge (as well as intelligence). When we read the text of an article, we first of all pay attention to the content, and not to the names and regalia of the authors (or is someone paying attention?). The truth expressed by the student is no worse than the one that is uttered by the academician (in the Russian sense - that is, a full member of the Academy of Sciences). Another thing is that PhD allows him to apply for certain scientific and administrative positions (for example, in Russia - head of a laboratory, head of a department at a university, etc.). There are known scientists who do not have a scientific degree, but have high authority in science, as well as PhD, who have done absolutely nothing in their life.
