I think that the reason is because DH5alfa are not suitable for infection with M13. They lack F' episome and the Tn10(TetR) transposon. The only way then to obtain phage particles is to transform the phage DNA.
Usually the recommended E. coli host strain ER2738 (F´ proA+B+lacIq Δ(lacZ)M15 zzf::Tn10(TetR)/fhuA2 glnV Δ(lac-proAB) thi-1 Δ(hsdS-mcrB)5.[rk–mk–McrBC–]) is a robust F+ strain with a rapid growth rate and is particularly well-suited for M13 propagation.
