To determine the mean river Width in sections, there are different methods. As you know, rivers shape isn't an unique shape and I can't calculate it by mathematical methods that usually we used in numeral shapes. I can calculate the area that covered by channel (A) and the length of flow (L) in study section, can I use this typical equation "A/L=w"?

Thanks for your suggestion. Actually the major problem in this study is the measurement software analyzer. I'm working with vector layers and i just can determine the area and perimeter of my channel vector map in GIS software. Do you have any software that can calculate average Width that you mentioned?

Is it your river stretch to long? Can't you do it by hand? Why don't you simply consider several transects in your study site, measure channel width of those a use the average of it? I would do that way, or maybe I didn’t understood your question?

Actually i'm looking to one methods that rid of the user errors. I think calculating channel area of section and dividing it to flow length, can gives us one more accurate width of river and it's not under user errors pressure. What do you think????

Dear Saleh: You may consider measuring the river width at specific locations using one of the high resolution satellite images in ArcGIS. Also, Google Earth can easily do this job for you. Good Luck, Abdou A.

I have send you paper that should help you. In gerenal, there are no error-free methods but if you know overall error magnitude affected you mesurements you can evaluate your measurements in the contex of errors and excluded this that is under error limits.

It does this by first calculating a centerline and then transects. You can later set the spacing of the transects.
