ex: I have isolated Streptomyces albus from marine sediments. can I name it some thing like M1 or S1. Any standard systematic codes are there to name the strain?
Hi, Your question is so general could you please tell which analyses have you worked to find that the strain is Streptomyces albus. In order to strain identification the polyphasic approach helps you better classify your isolated and puried isolate which is called a strain and it has a code as you write. The 16S rRNA gene sequencing is a better choose to genus level classification. The strain which is similar to other strains equal or bigger than 97% Blast similarity then you may think that this can be same with others. The value is smaller than 97 % you may think that you have a novel strain. The phenotypic tests, biochemical tests will help you to differentiate your strain from others. Chemotaxonomy such as polar lipid analyses FAME analyses, quinon analyses, DNA-DNA hybridization tests and GC content is necessary for strain identification whether if it is novel or not. You should compare the properties of the most similar species according to NCBI results. You should find Bergeys manual for Actinobacteria in order to find the recommendetations for the classification of Actinobacteria also.Because this is the general classification of bacteria.
What Ebru Tekin said is totally correct, plz check the paper what to do when your seqn similarities is less than 98.... The papers titles mentioned below
1) Sinomonas mesophila sp. nov., isolated from ancient fort soil
2) Hymenobacter latericoloratus sp. nov. and Hymenobacter luteus sp. nov., isolated from freshwater sediment
3) Hymenobacter mucosus sp. nov., isolated from a soil sample in karst cave
