If you find a suitable figure in the literature and you want to create a flowchart instead, using the same idea, would you still require rights and permission from the journal and/or the author or both? or just citing it will be enough? considering that it will not be the same figure at all but just the idea will be the same i.e pathophysiology of a disease.
It would be polite to ask, but as long as you say that your original graphic or chart is based on the work of_______ and give the citation, you should be OK.
I agree with Michael W. Marek, it is always good to ask, as well as inform the original authors what you intend to do, and then cite the work/figure as "adapted from XXX".
I think both Michael and Rodney are right. We are all in the knowledge sharing endeavor. Originator of a set data will not take exception to their reuse especially if ethical issues, acknowledgement etc. are respected. However, like they say, asking for permission should always be explored.
