I have modelled a RC frame in Abaqus and performed performed the dynamic analysis under earthquake. Now, I want to obtain hysteretic energy dissipated during the analysis. How can I get this value?
As you know, the hysteretic energy is the work done by an element during it's inelastic behavior and after it's yield. You can obtain this value by calculating the area under peak point of Force-Displacement curve.
In a cyclic analysis, in each cycle the wasted energy is the area inside the curve and the total dissipated energy is the sum of wasted energy in all the cycles.
I have plotted base shear vs roof displacement curve for 2 story RC frame subjected to El Centro earthquake. I have applied acceleration time history in Z direction at the base of frame. So I added the reaction forces in z direction to obtain the base shear response history. Roof displacement response history I directly obtained from output. But after plotting the base shear - roof displacement curve I got the graph attached below. After looking at the graph I don't feel its the correct way of plotting base shear roof displacement plot.
Is there any other way of plotting base shear vs roof displacement curve? Please let me know.
I simulated El Centro ground motion. What are PSD methods ? How to use them to get energy dissipated?
Also, I want to mention that from Abaqus also I am getting direct energy outputs. So, can any one tell me which energy outputs should be used to get the dissipated energy. I feel that sum of viscous dissipation and plastic dissipation energy might be total/hysteretic energy dissipated by the system. But I am not sure about this.
Prachi Verma The suitable energy output variable indentifier that you will use to get the total hysteretic energy dissipated during dynamic loading depends on the constitutive model of RC that you have used. Maybe providing a more detailed description of the RC model that you have used could help.
George Papazafeiropoulos I have modelled steel as elastic-perfectly plastic and concrete through concrete damage plasticity model. I have considered damping as 5 %. I have provided el centro acceleration time history at the base of the rc frame. And performed dynamic analysis.
Actually I want to calculate the park ang damage index. So, I need the value of hysteretic energy dissipated during dynamic loading.
