i am planning to study the effect of local honey in chemotherapy induced mucositis specifically in tongue in rat model. for this i have to excise the tongue and make the section. so my question is how should i make section of tongue? longitudinal (from tip to base) or vertical (through the whole thickness of tongue at middle of anterior third of tongue). objective is to measure the epithelial thickness, to see presence or absence of inflammatory cells and engorged blood vessels in connective tissue..
could you suggest me epithelium from which surface of tongue should i measure ? dorsum or ventral of tongue. thank you for useful suggestions.
Mahdy sir, i think mucosal lining is present in both ventral of tongue and dorsum of tongue. though some differences occurs like keratinization is absent in ventral mucosa, and papillae are also found to be absent in ventral mucosa. if i am wrong please correct me.

we have been working on both hamster tongues and rat tongues. and if your experiments have to do with study the epithelial thickness and presence of inflammatory cell in response to the chemotherapy?
you have to decide if you want plain epithelium or specialized epithelium because the tongue as oyiou will see from the image i have enclosed has three surfaces
the dorsal surface is usually keratinized and has a lot of Papilla and it will confuse your data when you apply the chemotherapy best place is the lateral side place and the ventral side place these are pure Mucosal places and most of the cancer is on the lateral surface
The ventral surface is non keratinized epithelium and when you apply the chemotherapeutic agent youon that surface you will see the results easily.as i told you before we studied wound healing on the lateral surface of the rats tongue and it was easy study where we did not have problem with the papilla .
my conclusion is use the lateral or ventral surface of the tongue and you will get good results.
