Most of the text books of anatomy list only thyrohyoid, omohyoid, stylohyoid and digastric as the suprahyoid group of muscle without mentioning the hyoglossus. can anybody suggest me is there any reason behind it.
According to me the Suprahyoid muscles are grouped based on it function similar to the muscles of mastication... so the suprahyoid muscles are basically involved in elevating the hyoid bone. These originates from different bones and inserts into the hyoid bone.. Hyoglossus on the other hand originates from the hyoid bone and terminates within the tongue..Functions in retracting the tongue and hence the exclusion from suprahyoid muscles. Hope you find my reasoning acceptable and rational. good luck!!
