I use the 'non-isothermal flow' module in COMSOL 4.4
I am trying to understand how COMSOL exacly solves the NS equations..I know the equations used (mentioned in the user's guide)..
There are ample references in literature for how NS equations are discretised in finite volume methods ( streamline vorticity formulation,Primitive variables based method etc).
I could not find any similar references for finite element approaches.
Any help will be appreciated.
There are exact names of solvers and algorhitms in the calculation setup and some more info in the help. After you've seen the name of the algorithm, try to google, they're pretty well-known.
But note COMSOL isn't open source so I'm afraid we would never now how exactly it solves the problems.

COMSOL solves the weak form of the NS equations with a number of stabilization methods. The theory is very well presented and explained in the user manual including references to journal publications.
I would recommend the following books as well:
- Incompressible flow and the Finite Element Method,Gresho and R. L. Sani (2000). This is a good book for first principles.
- The Finite Element Method for Fluid Mechanics, O. C. Zienkiewicz (2013). This book is referenced in the COMSOL user manual and a lot of the algorithms used by COMSOL were developed from this text.
