I found many articles saying that when we feed raindeers in captivity with high protein food, they have less mortality of offsprings and mothers are well influenced by it too. But I can´t figure out the mechanism - when you feed "normal" ruminant (like cow) by protein diet, she will not survive... Is it about their different hepatocytes? Or glukoneogenesis is not so important cause they can absorb monosacharides throw intestines?

Look, I made an big experiment for my PhD thesis with examination of urea in blood and milk but at cows with reproductive disorders and open servis period up to 60 days ....their liver enzimes AST, ALT, total blood proteins and urea were high, as well Ca:P ratio was not balanced ....THE COWS WERE FED WITH MORE PROTEINS in RATION AND ALSO the balance between proteins and carbonhydrates was not good....I think that liver's hepatocytes are not so diferent and if AST level is high so the liver is working with overload....also, pls remember this HIGH BLOOD UREA IS LOWERING THE PROGESTERON LEVEL, so belive me that they will have some reproductive problems but after few time nus efects will come on the surface ....pls write me if you get some conclusion, I m very interesting,

Thank you so much for your answer. It is really interesting. The problém is connected with a zoo where I practise. They have reindeers in protein rich diet and they are much healthier and more beautiful (like their fur, antlers..). And in another zoo they stop using protein rich diet and reindeers are in poor condition mostly during witer. And I´m absolutely fascinated because I have no idea how the mechanism works that they can live better in protein rich diets (like really rich - diet for racing horses, I don´t know the parameters but I´ll try to find them).
In your case - the mortality of fetus/offspring was higher after protein rich diet? Don´t you have an article about it? Or your thesis - is it in English? I would really like to read it :).
I´m trying to find more, maybe it will be nice to start research based on this theme.

Really this problematic is very interesting for us both, pls keep data, papers everything which is helpfull.....my PhD thesis will be completly finished in February 2015, and after that I m planing to translate PhD summary from Bulgarian to English, and you will see some interesting results about this problematic....Even I m here in Macedonia, we can make nice colaboration and make papers and projects together....I have many data for these examined cows reproductive hystory and also their problems with conception and early abortus (low pregnancy rate), so we can make many papers by comparision of mine cows and yours reindeers :)))))))))

I can´t do it just by myself, but I am already talking to the biochemistry section of my university and I´ll talk to the zoo veterinarian and I hope we´ll start some research :). Also we have moose in the zoo and trying the protein rich diet in other ruminants, so I think that will be interestng to find how it really works :) I will let you know when there will be some news. And looking forward to your thesis :)

Pls dont forget to make examinations in different seasons because mine were made in all seasons in one year and we have shown that season influence over blood parameters and UREA level, and reproduction !
Another thing, pls have in your mind which proteins you are using (degradable, undegradable, mixed protein ration or grazing pasture proteins)
