How does one get funding from the EU?

I am interested in hearing from anyone who has succeeded in getting a Marie Curie IEF or CIG or similar grant. What makes the difference between failure to meet their criteria (impact, S&T quality and so on) and success? Is there any way I could study examples of successful applications?
