For a research project we need a UPS (Un-interuptible Power Supply or 'no-break') that puts out 12VDC instead of the more common 220VAC. Also it should use a linear voltage regulator in stead of a switch-mode power supply, as the UPS will feed a sensitive HF receiver. Does such a product exist commercially (and for a reasonable price) or should I construct one myself?
You better construct one by yourself.
For example, this could be a power supply for your receiver,
consisting from the appropriate 12V automobile
battery and some simple linear charger

Better is construct one by yourself.
Use step down transformer and rectifier to get DC voltage which will have the required DC plus the headroom required for Linear voltage regulator. Next use MOSFET based Linear voltage regulator ( Advantage of MOSFET regulator is, the headroom voltage is around 500mV).
Next Feed the Voltage regulator output to the required load(sensitive HF reciever), at the same time feed the output to a battery charge controller and charge the battery. While mains power exists you will be having 12V for your load and battery will get charged, When there is power (mains) break battery will supply the power to load. Suitably calculate the battery size according to the load power required.
