You can used a panel of cell lines from lung, colon cancer etc and normal cell line like NIH3T3 to check the cytotoxicity of your desired compound my MTT assay.

In the lab we use to test new amphibian peptides with MTT, but bearing in mind that MTT is a test to measure metabolic activity, mainly NADPH. People in literature asume that low MTT activity is due to decrease in metabolic activity, and by association, cell citotoxicity. Also low metabolic rate cells will give low  MTT activity, whereas high proliferative cell will give higher MMT activity. That is why some people in the comunity dislike the idea of MTT as a good citotocixity test

We use MTT as initial screening of peptides, then we perfom cell citometry with propidium iodide (PI), which will permeate dead cells. In a case of an anticancer peptides, one could use DIOC to detect mitochondrial potential changes and anexin as an apoptotic marker to check if the peptidic efect is disruption of membrane potential and apoptosis induction. 

Our peptides dissolve pretty well in water, and as all molecules, don´t like repeated freezing and thawing, which could reduce the activity.
