I have extracted total DNA from human diploid fibroblasts grown on the surface of 60mm dishes. Everything looks good, but when I completed successive phenol:chloroform extractions and then added 1/10th vol. 3M NaOAc and ethanol precipitated it, there is an extreme amount of salt present on the pellet. The entire solution becomes cloudy white when I agitate it to resuspend the pellet and I receive readings on the spectrophotomer for 260/230 = 0.05 to 0.30.

Does anyone know why I am seeing so much salt present? I tried precipitating one tube without adding the NaOAc, but there was no pellet (just a shimmery transparent substance on the bottom of the tube). I am not adding too much salt because I re-made the 3M NaOAc to be sure.
