Both can develop pink colony on MacConkey agar.Does someone have a simple and effective techniques for differentiation? If I want to count the number of citrobacter rodentium in feces, how can I avoid growing normal E. coli on Mac plates?
Simplest way would be to use the glowing version of C. rodentium I made about 10 years ago :) Are you doing experimental infections?
You may try Eosine methylene blue agar medium. E.coli will give metallic Green colur however the Citrobacter had dusky brown color.

Yes I am doing experimental infections to induced mice colitis.but it is hard to count the Cr number in feces
You might consider switching from MacConkey agar to citrate minimal medium. E. coli is unable to use citrate as a carbon source. If you need to, you can add bile salts to the citrate minimal medium to retain the selective capability of MacConkey agar.
