If you use instruments like HPTLC, and such, you could see the library in database for your result. But if you use manual TLC, I think you should check each polarity of your product, starting material, and reagent that could be seen in UV ray..
I agree as to the information regarding Rf values, but if you use a reagent to visualize the spots and the colors or shades differ from the standard sample you know at this point that the compounds differ. If you have a UV light source with different frequencies, and the spots give similar results (and if the visualizing reagents give similar results than you need to run MS or GCMS or LCMS to get identifications.
