Technical disciplines need a generation of effective students, but the current generation of students, They are not ambitious (inert), has created by the digital age, so they away from studying technical and engineering disciplines.
To me, attract more students to the applied fields of science which could be more practical and understandable rather than pure theoretical science and courses thus could seem more attractive to them.
Establish more real and practical connections between the industrial sections, engineering companies and stakeholders with the schools, and consequently making more workshops with cooperation of engineering sectors for students to make them more interested.
Try to absorb more women to the engineering fields, although this may look like a cliche, however, generally and in real world men tend more to engineering fields rather easier, hence methods to attract more women could be more fruitful indeed.

Students can be attracted by raising levels of public awareness and understanding of engineering and its underlying science. To attract more students to STEM, the stakeholders (e.g. higher education commission/ministry of education) should provide funding to hold awareness fairs, provide mentorship, and arrange for sponsorship and scholarships.
There is a high association between parents being in Science field and children being in the same. Providing mentoring and scholarships to low socioeconomic children who do not have parents serving as mentors will be useful.

In order to make an impression to young students, one needs to introduce science to middle years kids, like ages 7 to 10. You can achieve this by schools visits to zoos, museums, nature walks, displays of rocks and fossils (that I do at schools), or other places of interest near home.
A former student of mine (school teacher now) organized a 800 km school trip to visit some interesting museums.
