One of the remedy of ASR is replacing part of the cement by metakaolin. This solution is well known in the concrete industry and utilizes the fact that the metakaolin absorbs the alkali ions responsible for the reaction. ·

Since metakaolin is relatively expensive, costing about three times as much as cement, some researchers are working on, low-cost ASR-suppressing admixtures. · Another method of avoiding ASR is applying protective coatings to the glass particles.

However, the efforts of expanding this solution into a viable and economical alternative are still at the conceptual stage.

The mentioned suggestions are only effective when making new concrete or mortar. To manage existing concrete structures affected my ASR, finding ways to limit the ingress of water such as coating with epoxy will prevent the progression of the alkali silica reaction

It is worth to also mention that the formation of the silica gel does not cause any deleterious damage in the concrete. It is when the gel becomes bigger due to its hydroscopic nature and presence of water, that tension is caused within the concrete which leads to expansion and cracks subsequently

It is interesting to note that finer glass such as glass powder(one of SCMs ) has been found to contribute to inhibiting the ASR reaction
