I am raw to this area. I would like to know how to generate a primer to a specific gene from a specific bacterium or virus, like Escherichia coli or HPV, for instance. Does the organism has to be one which genome is already sequenced? If yes, can I obtain a primer for a specific gene that was not used elsewhere yet? Does it have comercial rights if someone has already identified simultaneously, from separate labs in the world, the same gene I want to identify?

I thought about going through reverse genetics, RFLP, VNTR and SNP. Am I in the right path?
