I am currently modelling a riveted lap joint CFRP. I have a problem regarding the implement damage model (Hashin) since my material model uses a solid element.
Can anybody advise me of any strategies that can be applied to model it, still using Hashin (without creating UMAT subroutine)?

Hashin model is implemented in Abaqus to use it we have to select elastic lamina behavior law in material property. This kind of behavior law can be used only for shell element or continuum shell element. With a solid element you have to use define a UMAT.

I agree with Mr Stephane that Hashin damage model is implemented in Abaqus only for shell element or continuum shell element. As for a solid element you have to use a user-defined subroutine which is for Abaqus/ Implicit called 'UMAT' and for Abaqus/Explicit called 'VUMAT'.

Shell and continuum shell elements are implemented in Abaqus but since your material model uses solid elements, you have to implement a User Material subroutine (UMAT) if it is for Abaqus/ Implicit.

The Hashin damage initiation criteria which implemented in ABAQUS must be used with elements with a plane stress formulation, like( plane stress, shell, continuum shell, and membrane ). when our model is solid and we want to use hashin abaqus...we must use the continuum shell element. for other cases we must write umat and vumat subroutine.
