Please can someone tell me if there a possibility of inducing dermatophytes (e.g T.rubrum, T.tonsurans, M.canis and T. concentricum) isolated from humans on a laboratory mice. Will the infection grow on the mice
It would depend on the dermatophyte. The natural habitat of Trichophyton mentagrophytes is mice and other rodents. Trichophyton quinckeanum has been used to establish dermatophytosis in laboratory rats. Trichophyton erinacei is confined to the hedgehog and humans (which is why it is found only in Europe and in New Zealand, where hedgehogs where introduced. Previous researchers could not establish Trichophyton tonsurans infections in mice. You may have trouble establishing infection with T.rubrum, T.tonsurans, T. concentricum and M. canis due to species-specificity of the pathogens.
