I think that one of the best way to test the peculiar way of interaction of a specific compound with cell membranes is that of using biomimetic models. So doing you can isolate single aspects of the complex cell membrane in order to understand the specific role played by each of them.

Well, I have been using biomimetic membranes since 1992. These systems reproduce the membrane structure in a simplified form. I usually use mercury supported phospholipid mono- and bi-layers and these systems are often suitable to investigate the mechanism of interaction of foreign compounds with cell membranes both in the case they interact with their surface as well as for the case of a deeper penetration into the hydrophibic region.
