I am about to write a book about the language varieties of the Tuat area and i find a lot of data and literature in my students' final projects, in particular those under my supervision. S i wonder if it is not academically unacceptable to make use of others' material to write one's own papers and books. Thanks for sharing your ideas about this questioning.

Dear Mr. Al-Khafaji I will certainly take into consideration Subir's advice and yours, yet the problem is with the referencing as final projects are not always looked at as reliable 'scientific' sources in Algerian universities even if written by Master students because of lack of scientific rigour, weak methodology and, last but not least, plagiarism.

If these students are many and their contribution is small, then you should acknowledge them. If many contributions, then co-authors.

A few. Ph D mentors put their names first while publishing with their students. Most of the other mentors put the name of the scholar first. In rare case mentors like to see their names in the acknowledgement only. To me the last option is the best. In my opinion mentors should not be the first author without the consent of the student.
Yes, it is acceptable if the intent is to improve their writing skill. The contribution of students should be duly rewarded by way of offering co-authorship. Academic exploitation for self interest is unethical and unacceptable.

Using student's research work and terming it as teacher's own, showcases the adulterous attitude of pedagogues. I agree, there are students who don't contribute at all in paper work/ projects, then it is fine, because there won't be any conflict of interest then. But, even if there is a small contribution, the teacher must give the student as a 'co-author'.
Chicanery is something which must be avoided not just in the research avenue but everywhere.
It reminds me of an old saying: "A Lie has no legs to stand upon!"

Depending upon the amount of each student's work you include those students as co-authors. If the contribution from any student is minimal, then accknowledge their efforts under "Acknowledgement"
I had an undergraduate student help me gather experimental data and he is a coauthor along with my advisor in a publication.
Generally speaking, in post graduate programs, the students are always collaborating with their teachers on various projects . In cases where the data have been contributed by the student, they should be considered as co authors. Anything less is not really very important and the teachers need not to mention them in the paper.

So, I agree with those who think we include among the authors the student who participates in an article or research. Dear colleagues, i think that the best way is to acknowledge those students whose material and data were used in our own projects when these last do not participate "fully" in ours; whereas, those who were part of the paper in a considerable manner must be cited as co-authors. What do you think?
If you can cite the contributors (which I'd consider acceptable for smaller contributions), cite them.
If this is not possible / applicable due to whatever reason, name them as co-authors. Depending on the nature of your book, I could even imagine a book where co-authors are listed on a "per-chapter" base, to make clear(er) who contributed to what.
Just give them the credit they deserve.

I'm sorry, It's not always an exploitation especially for undergraduate students. Imagine if the School Director permits me to do bibliography through the Archive containing all previous dissertations, exams sheets, etc. Also, the same for the National archive, etc..
How can I consider the students rights as co-authors? The work is a kind of review, ....
In a pinch if we quote them in the Acknowledgements Part, Also the name of School, academic year, etc.. It will be a honor for all and also it shows the quality of education and its outcomes, .....
In addition, if there was a few number of your students, you can cite them in each part of the text, and also in the Acknowledgements Part.

For the graduate or postgraduate students (Master), it's another problem. Their names must exist in any article and as a first author if their contribution is important.
If the work is inconsistent and necessitates revision, improvement, a complement, another contributors, etc. the first author must be the advisor, and all contributors must be a considered as co-authors or in acknowledgements if their contributions is very small, ...
In the case of Congress, etc., in Oral or Poster Communication, I prefer that the first author is the student. He must learn how to present a scientific work, to preparing eventual PhD in future, ....

For the book, the problem is delicate. If the discipline is scientific, the thesis of a student can not generally lead to a book, perhaps a chapter, .... For the literary disciplines, the thesis can lead to a book where the student can the only author, unless the work requires a good revision, an update, etc .... The supervisor must be present in the work . If the supervisor wants to do some bibliographic review from several contributions, I think he is free, provided that he cites all the works clearly in the text to benefit the students in their CV and preserve their rights, etc ...

Not acceptable. Perhaps you can make your students' as co-author(s) or cite their works in your paper / book. Also do your own rigorous literature review & review your students' works ensure they are genuine and / or no element of plagiarism etc.
It's a subjective question and depends the supervisor's role and contribution to the students research. If it's significant then there's no harm in joint publications. In fact this is the beauty of the research in academia and this is how research community grows within an institution.
It would be unfair practice without including the student's name as first author in research papers and books.
If the research has been mainly conducted by the student and the teacher's contribution as a guide and reviewer, the first author should be the student and the teacher is the co-author. But if it is an undergraduate research and drastic changes have been made byvthe teacher to the research, the teacher's name should appear as the first author.
In my opinion, a respected researcher never exploits the students' effort and use their results to publish any articles or books.

Dear Michael, thanks a lot for the message. What I intend to do is summarise what has been done by the students under my supervision, use some of their data and examples for illustration, interpret their results and analyse them from my own point of view. I will cite every single student's dissertation and final project to highlight their efforts and underscore their merits.
