Once the Balsam is dry the removal may not be easy with the usual solvents like: benzene, xylene(of course), chloroform, ether, ethanol, ethyl acetate, turpentine (the solvent used by art painters, acetone. Some times solid layers, as those left when the solvent of the Balsam has evaporated, submerging the piece to clean in a warm solution of a detergent and leaving it to simmer could do the trick. Finally if the piece to clean is mineral (glass for instance) the good old sulphochromic mixture could do the trick. BUT it requires careful handling. Good luck and keep me posted.
