I am trying to analyse responses using the 'other, please specify' answer in my survey.. I'm not an Excel expert so I'm trying to figure out how best to do this, can anyone help?
Also, could pivot tables help me identify variations by region, age etc? Again, I'm not sure how pivot tables work.

The responses of 'other, please specify' should be grouped into smaller categories, then code them before transferring into the Excel spread sheet for further analysis.

In case of a categorical question (variable), the best way to analyze is:
1) to place a number (in excel column) on every possible answer
2) to calculate frequencies and percentages of every possible answer in your sample
IMORTANT: Do not use statistical measures like average, variance, standard deviation, because the numbers are CATEGORIES.
Pivot tables is a nice and easy-to-use approach.
