A small portable imaging cytometry system (Cellometer Vision) has been developed by Nexcelom Bioscience LLC (Lawrence, MA) for automated cell concentration and viability measurement using bright-field and fluorescent imaging methods. Cellometer imaging cytometry for fluorescence-based cell population analysis was compared with conventional flow cytometry. Using this imaging cytometry method for fluorescence-based assays that are typically done by flow cytometry offers a quick, simple, and inexpensive alternative method for biomedical research, which may be beneficial for smaller research laboratories and clinics.

The cell cycle data were more or less comparable between the Cellometer image cytometry and flow cytometry.
Some differences that were noted are as follows.
1) The Cellometer Vision results showed larger standard deviation, which is likely due to the fact that Cellometer used much less cell sample than flow cytometer.
2) It must also be noted that flow cytometry collects optical signals differently than Cellometer, which may result in plots with different scale value.
