We are looking to derive heart rate and respiratory rate from minute wrist movements in UNCONSCIOUS (mostly motionless) patients, in the hope of eventually developing a wearable to prevent opioid overdose. For now we are collecting measurements in such patients using the Apple Watch, which renders HR using light and RR using acoustics. Unfortunately, the Apple Watch is a bit expensive for a public health solution; we would love to be able to infer HR and RR from just an accelerometer, which could then be put in a custom wristband with 5G chipset that would have no value to anyone but the patient, but would alert Emergency Medical Services when a mortal overdose is imminent. We are not experts on ballistocardiography, so if anyone has already done this in an academic research setting, we would very much like to build on existing work rather than do it from scratch (and probably make even more mistakes than we would anyway).
