Has anyone used a 4in1 cholesterol tester on research mice? We have used the One Touch handheld glucose monitoring system to measure glucose on high fed diet fed mice. However, has anyone used a cholesterol monitoring system on mice or are ELISA kits the only option?
I've used the CardioChek (from PTS) on rats. The total cholesterol and triglyceride numbers tend to agree with clinical lab results reasonably well, but the uglier samples often don't read. I think I've seen >30% non-reads on Zuckers on HFD. I think the chemistry on the lipid test strips is more finicky than the chemistry for glucometers.
Everything depends on the accuracy of the measurements that you want to receive and what is important in your research. In general you can use cholesterol tester, but you do not notice the small changes.
