I've compared growth rate with trace elements and without them for a couple of other microorganisms. I'm guessing it may look quite similar here. As for the growth rate, all the microorganisms I tested achieved log phase growth easily when the trace elements were present in the medium. On the contrary, some of them weren't able to grow without any trace elements. But again, some of them achieved the log phase growth without trace elements present in the medium. It took them a bit more time, though.
The effect that Szymon observed can be a consequence of different qualities of the tested cultures. To have a realsitic knowledge about the effect, you need to passage them several times with or without trace elements. A similar effect is the presence of complex media; sometimes you can have the impression that the slightest presence of yeast extract or similar complex nutrients seems to be something evil for people that postulate that every process is possible out of synthetic media. In reality, especially a chain of precultutes is more stable using a small amount of complex sources, like 0,1 or 0,2 g/L that provide the media too with natural trace elements.
