I have prepared some methanol extracts of Rauvolfia root for alkaloid estimation. It is stored in refrigerator and now I want to know the storage life of that extract.
In that case, you can compare the metabolite profile for both your fresh extract and after storage to know if your extract is stable with such condition
The shelf life of a plant material is influenced by many intrinsic parameters and depends on the compound/or activity of interest. In your specific case:
* If you want to determine the storage time, you should follow the behavior of these alkaloids during time; but
* If you are just concerned by whether alkaloids will be preserved during storage or not, then store your samples at -20°C.
Please download below link. "HPLC Stability Indicating Assay Method for Marketed Herbal Antihypertensive Formulations Containing Rauwolfia serpentina Benth. By Sandhya. M. Bagde*, Smita.G.Mujbaile and P.S.Gangane."
As you extracted Rauwolfia serpentina which contains indole alkaloid "Reserpine" which is heat and photo sensitive. I think best way is to analyse reserpine content of methanolic extract before keeping for storage. Properly dried and sealed alcoholic extract if you will keep below 5 degree centigrade or (-20 C) As NOBOSSE suggested previously can be easily store for 4 to 6 week.
Depends on what kind of solvents they are extracted with also what what compounds you are interested. Some compounds are more sensitive than others. If plant material is extracted with acetone or chloroform or methanol, they stay longer than water extracts with out microbial growth. However, better keep extracts at -20C if you want to store them for few years.
Extracted sample was diluted by adding sulphuric acid and then kept in freezer, it lasted for 3 weeks. while water extract can be preserved in freezer for 3 to 4 months (till date) , it gets same results. further I agree with response of respected Prof. Omar M. Atrooz and respected Kranthi k Chebrolu.
