Gene expression has two main processes; DNA to RNA called gene transcription, followed by RNA to protein called translation. When we perfom RT-PCR we use mRNA to look for genetic information written therein, which is just a promise that protein may arise from there.

Why then do we refer to results of RT-PCR as gene expression? Should we not be using the terms "gene transcription", "level of gene transcripts"?
