A higher intensity of the G band of graphene sample is said to be crystalline, whereas D band indicates the extent of defects. Both D and G bands confirms the formation of graphene with lesser defects and crystalline structure. Now if the number of layers is less than (between 5 and 10 I don't remember the rigth value at the moment) the intensity of 2D band (or also known G') becomes higher than G band, so the increase of the ratio between the intensity of G and 2D bands (IG/I2D) directly indicates an increases in the number of graphene layers.
