Yes, I'm well aware of the relative numerical abundance of TIMPs and MMPs, and the fact that TIMPs in general are viewed as promiscuous inhibitors of MMPs. However, the interactions between some TIMPs and some MMPs (e.g. between TIMP2 and MMP2), have been well documented, whereas others are just assumed to occur. As far as I can tell, no one has published anything on the interactions of MMP21 with any TIMPs, so basically we're just assuming one or more of the TIMPs regulate the activity of this protease.
I was just wondering if anyone knew of anything I'd missed in my search, or if there was any unpublished data that might be relevant here.
Yeah, a1 PI, and a2 macroglobulins, as well as RECKs are big players in regulating extracellular proteases, but I haven't found any evidence of any of these, or any TIMP regulating MMP21 published anywhere.
