If an exogenous naphthalene-containing peptide is introduced into a cell how clearly can it be detected by u/v against the background autofluorescence of natural aromatic amino acids with the cell's proteins?
The paper linked below may be helpful to answering your questions? I am not a chemist, but this was a chemical sensor made in my lab and it can be visualized in live cells very easily. Apologies in advanced if naphthalene and naphthalimide are not remotely the same.
