The official BD website only states the function and what it is for. They say that it is a chromogenic/fluorogenic medium used to detect and enumerate Escherichia coli and total coliforms in drinking water by the membrane filtration technique. Why it is called 'MI agar' in the first place?
Salam, MI is the abbreviation of 2 bacterial enzymes substrates added in this medium which are MUGal (a fluorogen) and IBDG (a chromogen). MUGaL is the substrate for total coliforms enzyme beta-galactosidase and IBDG is the substrate for E.coli enzyme beta-D-glucuronidase..IBDG stands for Indoxyl-β-D-glucuronide and MUGal stands for 4-methylumbelliferyl-β-D-galactopyranoside.
