Dear colleagues,
I have just started to work on the environmental project. I have to analyze the microorganisms in the air. For that I have to choose the correct type of filters. In my group, 2 types of filters are used, the polycarbonate and the quartz filter. Does anyone has an idea about the difference between these types (apart from the material it is produced from) and how I could benifit from both of them?

The most important is the pore size of your filter material. The type of material influence the hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity of the filter material.
Secondly, sterilization procedure probably will be different.

You can benefit for your environmental project of both filters, just know that: - Quartz fiber filters are suitable for situations in which the filter must withstand high temperatures and remain chemically and biologically inert. This type of filter has an excellent retention of fine particles by means of adsorption mechanisms to the quartz fibers. On the other hand, it is a very permeable type of filter, it lets pass large volumes of air, it is also resistant to organic solvents, acids (except HF) and alkalis.
-On the other hand polycarbonate filters are ideal for microscope applications, are widely used in the rapid visualization of the presence of bacteria in processes of analysis by epifluorescence. Only these filters, unlike those of quartz, should not exceed a temperature of 140ºC. They are also ideal in the analysis of particles in the air, chemotaxis, cytology, histology, parenteral and water analysis.
